A Summer of Hope

The summer of 2020 is almost over.  What a summer it has been. Life is certainly different than it was just a year ago.  Out of tragic events we have seen promising change and new hope.  More and more people are starting to do their part to help curb the spread of the deadly covid-19 virus as scientist and researchers search for better treatments and vaccines.  People from all walks of life are beginning to reject racism and bigotry and stand up for the equal treatment of all citizens across not only this nation but the entire world. This summer we also saw the Supreme Court rule that firing or not hiring an employee based on sexual orientation or gender identity is indeed a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Business as Unusual

Like everyone else, Sunday’s Child had to make adjustments to our “normal” operating procedures to adapt to the new challenges.  Our talented and dedicated board and members were able to make a way forward using virtual meeting tools to carry out the mission of awarding grants to well deserving Pensacola Bay area nonprofit organizations that share our values of LGBTQ+ diversity, inclusion and equality.  At the Sunday’s Child Annual Meeting on June 28 four organizations were awarded $25,000 each to support projects affecting animal welfare, HIV prevention, LGBTQ+ seniors, and childhood education.  The recipients were Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge, Oasis Florida, Council on Aging of Northwest Florida, and INERTIA Education Programs.  You can read more about the recipients HERE.

Local publications have picked up our story!  See articles by In Weekly and Summation Weekly.

You are Sunday’s Child

A big thank you to our members for your patience and participation as we navigated new ways of doing business. Between focus group meetings, site visits, absentee ballot voting and live online voting during the annual meeting, we had great member participation.  The Sunday’s Child model does not work without each of you.  Together we have raised and awarded over $536,000. Money that has remained right here in the Pensacola Bay area.  Money that has benefited many communities including the homeless, the hungry, animals, children and young adults, the elderly,  arts programs, the LGBTQ+ community, the blind and citizens with unique learning abilities.  See all of our past grant winners HERE.

Full Steam Ahead

Now more than ever our nonprofit community needs our support.  Many organizations have been unable to host their annual fundraising events. Many have seen an increased need for services during these challenging times.  We can make a difference by making sure funds are available in 2021. The Sunday’s Child membership drive is underway and we need your help. Joining or pledging now will help with planning as we navigate this membership drive virtually and socially distanced. Our membership committee has been busy planning several online events as well as an outdoor event that will allow us to be together at a safe distance. Some of our members may be facing financial hardship this year making it even more challenging to reach our goal. You can help by recruiting friends and family to attend one or more of our upcoming events to learn more about Sunday’s Child and giving them the opportunity to ask questions to see if our organization is right for them. “Each one reach one” – If each of our members encouraged just one person to join this year, we can make this the best year yet.

Get Involved

Sunday’s Child is an all volunteer organization. Our board and our members make it all happen. If you have time, talent and skills that you would like to share with Sunday’s Child, please let us know.  We have many ways you can participate.

Grant Focus Groups – Help us review and vet grant applications. This member driven process determines finalists to be presented to membership at the annual meeting. This is a great way to learn more about the great nonprofit work being carried out in our community.

Membership Committee – We are nothing without out members. The membership committee is busy this time of year planning events and communications to attract new members and retain current members. It’s always a creative bunch.

Marketing Committee – Getting the message out is key to our success. Believe it or not there are people in the area that still do not know about Sunday’s Child. Help us fix that. If you have public relations or marketing talents or if you are a wizard on social media, we need you.

Outreach and Education Committee – Partnering with like-minded organizations and bringing educational opportunities to our area is the goal of this committee. Working together with our community benefits all involved.

Technology Committee – Our technology committee is the wizard behind the curtain. They maintain our website, our member database, google drive, forms, email, zoom and all the other technical tools that make our job easier.

Mixer Host – Though we won’t be hosting many live mixers this year there maybe ways you can help support our online events, pop-ups or our upcoming outdoor event. We can always put you on the list for next year.

Event Volunteer – Sign up as a volunteer to help at events and other task that may come up throughout the year. We promise we won’t work you to death.
